Nineteen people accused of being members of a Congolese rebel group, including one American citizen, planned to overthrow President Joseph Kabila of the Democratic Republic of Congo and offered mining rights in Congo in exchange for weapons and training, a South African prosecutor said Thursday.
The suspects asked South African undercover officers posing as mercenaries for machine guns, radios and surface-to-air missiles and for help to set up a training camp, said the prosecutor, Shaun Abrahams.
They were arrested Tuesday as they were on their way to what they believed would be their camp, Mr. Abrahams said.
One of the suspects was identified as James Kazongo, an American citizen, said an American Embassy spokesman.
