ICC orders Libya to hand over former intelligence chief

TRIPOLI - The International Criminal Court ( ICC) has ordered the Libyan government to hand over Abdullah Senoussi, former intelligence chief, to stand trial on charges of crimes against humanity, local media reported Friday.

The Hague-based in court also ordered Libya to give Ben Emmerson, a British lawyer appointed by the ICC to defend Senoussi, who is also slain leader Muammar Gaddafi's brother-in-law, the access to his client.

Libyan spokesman of the prosecutor-general Taha Barra told Xinhua that the ICC demand is only a standard procedure, adding that the government has requested to try Senoussi in Libya.

The ICC has said Libya is still obliged to comply with the extradition request of Senoussi, But Barra said that Libya will not extradite Senoussi because the Libyan judiciary is able to put him on a fair trial.

Taha Barra said in January that investigations were completed by the Attorney General on Senoussi's case, and would bring him to trial within two weeks.
