Johannesburg - A police reservist shot dead two teenagers before committing suicide in Springbok early on Thursday, Northern Cape police said.
Police spokesperson Donald Mdhluli said reservist Constable Phillip Collins, who was on duty at the time, phoned Springbok police and told them that he had just shot his two children.
He added he was about to kill himself.
Police drove to Collins' girlfriend's house, where his body was found with his service pistol.
Police then found the bodies of Anthony Pascal Cloete, 16, and Mary-Ann Justine Cloete, 13, in Viooltjies Street.
It was unclear whether the bodies were found inside a house.
Mdhluli said it was also unknown whether Collins was the children's biological father.
"At this stage the motive for the killing of the two children, as well as the death of reservist Constable Phillip Collins, is unknown."
Police opened an inquest and two murder dockets.
Further details were not immediately available.
