Twenty-eight year-old Zimbabwean newspaper vendor in South Africa, Aaron Mhukahuru, has been awarded by South African Correctional Services for alerting prison officials that dangerous criminals were escaping jail.
Mhukahuru was awarded with a bravery award and R5 000 for his heroic act this Friday by the Minister of Correctional Service, Sibusiso Ndebele.
Reports from South Africa say Mhukahuru was selling newspapers in the street when he noticed eight prisoners trying to escape from Pretoria prison last year.
He rushed to the main gate to alert the prison authorities and all the prisoners were rearrested.
It is uncleare whether this relates to the attempted escape by fellow Zimbabwean, serial jail-breaker, Bongani Moyo Themba Dube, and Khumbulani Sibanda, serving a 20 year sentence, who used their orange overalls to scale the wall.
