It was a dramatic scene of police misfiring at Metro wholesalers in Botswana on Saturday afternoon, as onlookers watched a police chase of suspected Zimbabwean robbery suspects that looked like a comedy scene.
Onlookers at the Metro wholesalers could not believe their eyes when the CID officer tasked with "taking the robbers out" horribly misfired at the slow moving navy blue Toyota Corona several times, allowing all the robbers to exit the shop and jump into the getaway car using another entrance, before driving off unscathed.
Two bystanders selling sweets at the entrance of the Metro Wholesalers showed The Monitor team small holes created by the CID officer's bullets as they missed the target.
"After four bad shots he ran out of bullets; when he was busy re-loading his gun, we saw more thieves, coming of the wholesale to get into their car and drive away; there were about four or five of them, it was funny; I think the CID guy was trying to go for the tires, but he missed with all the shots."
Luckily for the misfiring CID officer, the getaway car was in bad condition and could not match the chasing police white hyundai accent. The getaway car was soon caught near Coca Cola, when the cops finally managed to deflate the tyres with gun shots. The police established that the culprits, all Zimbabweans are in the habit of shoplifting. According to Broadhurst Police Station commander Superintendent Bonesi Molapise the suspects usually park their car and then enter a shop to shoplift and then use the car to get away with the goods.
This time however their movements attracted the attention of the Metro Wholesale security, who reported them to the police as people who looked like robbers. The police say all four of them have been caught and would possibly be charged with theft common.
