Mozambique's opposition movement, RENAMO on Friday rejected talks proposed by the government, keeping political tensions high after shootings by the suspected gunmen, the deadliest attacks in more than a decade.

The group also objected to Monday, the 22nd of April as the day when the talks would begin.

The negotiations proposed by the ruling FRELIMO party, followed the killing of four policemen and three civilians in ambushes by suspected RENAMO gunmen this month.

RENAMO denied any involvement in the killings of the civilians, which happened after gunmen ambushed a truck and two buses on the country's main north-south highway.

Meanwhile, analysts say RENAMO does not have the capacity to launch a widespread guerrilla campaign against Mozambican government, but are after derailing economic boom based on huge foreign investment in coal mining and natural gas exploration.

The analysts said the off-shore Rovuma field in the country, holds enough gas to supply Europe for the next 15 years.
