SA soccer star granted leave to appeal conviction for killing a Zim woman

Johannesburg - The Randburg Magistrate's Court has granted soccer player Bryce Moon leave to appeal his culpable homicide conviction, it was reported on Friday.
The appeal would be heard by the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg in July, The New Age reported.
The former Bafana Bafana player was fined R60 000 (or two years' imprisonment) in April for culpable homicide relating to the death in 2009 of pedestrian Mavis Ncube, who was hit by his car while walking in Katherine Street, Sandton.
He was acquitted of charges of murder, attempted murder, drunk driving and reckless or negligent driving.
In his appeal application submission, he described the fine as "excessive".
Moon's lawyer Naren Sangham told the newspaper he was certain the appeal would succeed.
Moon was quoted as telling the New Age he was relieved it was over.
"It's been four long years for me and my family, but by the grace of God we made it. This affected my career: I had to come back from playing overseas because of the trial."
