Johannesburg - A baby girl recently found in a fridge in Benoni, South Africa is alive and well, police said on Monday.
"The baby is in hospital, doing well, alive and kicking," said Captain Alfred Nakana.
Nurses at the hospital had named her "Nompilo", which meant mother of health, he said.
Neighbours called the police when they heard noises inside a broken fridge outside a house on 4 May, Nakana said.
The child's 32-year-old mother later admitted placing the infant in the fridge.
She told the police she had given birth alone and was afraid, so she decided to "throw it away".
Nakana said the woman was arrested and appeared in the Benoni Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on a charge of child abandonment.
The case was postponed until Wednesday, he said.
