JOHANNESBURG - Shepherd Moyo has been convicted on one count of attempted murder, three counts of rape and 11 of robbery.

On Wednesday, the so-called 'axe man' was sentenced to three life sentences without parole and an additional 165 years in prison.

Moyo was behind a two-year crime spree targeting Lonehill and Paulshof residents in northern Johannesburg.

He became notorious for evading police.

The criminal earned his nickname axe man because he carried a bush knife or an axe with him and robbed people of money, cameras, laptops and cellphones.

The convicted robber would wait for his victims to wake up in the morning, apologise to them and then jump over walls and security fences to escape police.

On occasion, he would even wait for officers to arrive before targeting a neighbouring house.

Moyo was finally arrested when police caught up with him in September 2011.
