BULAWAYO - A Lupane man who burnt the house of his wife's lover has appeared before a magistrate's court charged with criminal assault and unlawful entry.
Philani Moyo, 34, of Sheshe Village was slapped by provincial magistrate Abednigo Madzorera with a three-year jail sentence, wholly suspended on condition that he pays back $760 worth of property lost during the arson attack.
The court heard that on April 8 this year, Moyo returned from South Africa after receiving reports that his wife was cheating on him with a neighbour, Thokozani Nkomo.
Moyo confronted his wife about the affair, who initially denied it, but later admitted.
She also admitted that she was carrying Nkomo's baby.
Moyo threatened to take his adulterous wife to her in-laws before she disappeared without trace.
Moyo went to the residence of his wife's lover to make further enquiries about the affair and his wife's whereabouts.
Angered by this, Moyo torched three huts and a granary containing property worth $760.
In mitigation, Moyo said that he wanted to punish his wife's lover for having an illicit affair with his spouse.
The property included a double bed, a DVD player, sub-hoover speakers, a table and farm produce.
