A Zimbabwean man has been shot dead in Botswana by that country's security agents.
Police confirmed the shooting saying the Zimbabwean and others were trying to flee Gaborone's Bus Rank Filling Station on Tuesday night after an attempted armed robbery.
Botswana Police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Christopher Mbulawa confirmed the incident through a press release, saying police officers "killed a 44-year old Zimbabwean man at Shell Bus Rank on Tuesday night".
When contacted for more details, Mbulawa said the matter was still under investigation. "Like I always say we have nothing to hide about the shootout," said Mbulawa. In the press release Mbulawa claims the police were responding to an armed robbery report.
Meanwhile the manager of Shell Bus Rank Filling Station, Jordan Vista, said they were not aware that the four men in the Golf had any intention of robbing their filling station as they only saw a group of armed security agents shooting at the black Golf 4.
According to a source within the security forces, the four suspects were being tracked from Shell Filling Station in the Main Mall where they tried to rob but gave up when they realised police officers were in the vicinity. They then proceeded to the Shell Filling Station at the Bus Rank where they parked their vehicle before the shooting ensued. One of the employees, who was on duty Nametso Modukanele, said the four men asked her if she was the one who was resuming duty, after answering them they left the filling station.
"I was still helping a customer when I heard gun shots outside; so I dashed out of the shop to escape from the shooting," said Modukanelo who told Mmegi that because she was so scared she could not even attempt to see what was going on. The incident happened around 10pm.As soon on the footage of the CCTV, the four men first came in a blue Nissan March before they left but returned in a black Golf 4. After arriving in the Golf they sat inside the vehicle for about five minutes before police officers, in a vehicle, parked behind them shot the left rear tyre. The four tried to escape from the vehicle but security agents kept on shooting at the suspects.
The driver of the vehicle managed to flee from the scene while the passenger in the front seat was first hit in the leg before he was shot in the head and died. At the same time the other two passengers from the back seat exchanged fire with security agents before laying on the ground in surrender. While they were still on the ground the other passenger was shot in the left leg before the security agents rounded them all up and took them away from the scene.
