'Rapist' hangs self in police cells

A South African man, who was set to go on trial for raping 30 minors and two women, has hanged himself.

Reports from Johannesburg say Sifiso Makhubo (42) was found dead in his cell by police.

He was expected to plead to 122 charges ranging from rape, kidnapping, murder, attempted murder, robbery to wilfully infecting others with HIV.

The crimes took place in Kathorus, east of Johannesburg, between 2006 and 2011, when Makhubo was arrested.
