SA cops arrest Zimbabwean man over R1m cigarette smuggling

Police in South Africa's Limpopo province have arrested a Zimbabwean man for allegedly smuggling cigarettes worth R1 million.

Police spokesperson for Vhembe District, Major Mashudu Malelo confirmed the arrest which happened at Thohoyandou.

Major Malelo said the suspect was intercepted and found with several boxes of cigarettes along the Thohoyandou-Sibasa road.

"We arrested a 28 year-old Zimbabwean man following the interception of his Gauteng registered truck, which were carrying cartons of smuggled cigarettes.

We suspect the cigarettes were smuggled into country from Zimbabwe.

"We suspect the man could be linked to a well-organised syndicate involving others, but however, we are still investigating," he said.
