Johannesburg - Dozens of foreign-owned shops were burned and looted in Duduza on the East Rand, Johannesburg police said on Friday.

The violence on Thursday was sparked by the shooting and wounding of a 23-year-old man, allegedly by a Somali shop owner who sold him a used airtime voucher, police spokesperson Johannes Ramaphora said.

"Residents vented their anger by looting and burning foreign-owned shops in the area," said Ramaphora.

The Somali had been arrested and charged with attempted murder.

The firearm he used was sent for ballistic tests to determine if it was used in other crimes.

Five people were arrested for public violence and police were monitoring the situation.
