Zim man rapes Bots girl while parents attend all night prayers

A 46-year-old Zimbabwean immigrant recently appeared before a Francistown magistrate for allegedly raping a school girl while her parents were attending an all night prayer session.
Unemployed Zephaniah Moyo of Nkayi village in the Matabeleland North province was not asked to plead to the charges when he briefly appeared before Francistown Chief Magistrate Peggy Madandume.
According to court papers, the Zimbabwean immigrant raped a primary school girl whose age was not revealed in court. The incident allegedly happened on the 20th of September 2013 while the girl's parents were at an all night prayer session.
The prosecution led by Ofentse Sekadima argued that the man should be detained as their investigations were still fresh.
"We are still to record statements from other state witnesses," said Sekadima.
The prosecution expressed fears that the accused person might skip the country since his residence permit is questionable.
The court heard that Moyo has a residence permit but does not have a passport.
"He possesses a questionable residence permit. The police are still to investigate more as to how he managed to get a permit without a passport," the court heard.
Another issue to be investigated is how he entered the country since he failed to produce any form of a traveling document.
"With these reasons above, we humbly request that the accused person be remanded in custody," Sekadima added.
In response, Moyo pleaded with the court not to jail him saying he is taking care of an elderly diabetic woman in Tonota.
However, Madandume ordered that the man be detained. The case continues.
