A 23-year-old man accused of killing two policemen in South Africa in the Western Cape appeared in the Court on Friday, Hawks spokesperson McIntosh Polela said.

Sivuyile Sangovana, aged 23, faces murder charges after Warrant Officer Girshwin Matthee and Student Constable Cannon Cloete were killed while responding to a crime call in Kraaifontein, near Cape Town, on Sunday.

He would remain in custody after his appearance at the Blue Downs Magistrate's Court, and return to court on June 3.

Western Cape police spokesperson Colonel Andre Traut said investigations led members of the police's specialist unit, the Hawks, to Groote Schuur Hospital on May 24, where the 23-year-old was being treated for a gunshot wound.

At least 32 police officers had been killed since January this year.
