Two children were shot dead in Ga-Chuene, near Lebowakgomo, allegedly by their stepfather, Limpopo police said on Thursday.

South Africa - The 39-year-old man was on the run after allegedly killing the eight and 10-year-old girls on Wednesday, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said.

The man fetched his three children from their grandmother's house and took them to his wife's workplace.

"Seemingly, he could not talk to her as she was busy and apparently [he] went back outside. Without uttering any words he fired two shots killing one [of the girls] while the other one fled," said Mulaudzi.

He then returned to the grandmother's home with his youngest child, a two-year-old boy. Along the way he handed the boy to a friend.

He found the older girl at the grandmother's house. He allegedly shot her twice at close range and ran away.

Mulaudzi said the motive for the killing was unclear. The boy had since been reunited with his mother. Both of them were under police protection, Mulaudzi said.
