Mbombela - The African National Congress would move to speed up land reform and improve livelihoods especially in rural areas, President Jacob Zuma said on Saturday.

"It is a widespread acknowledgement that the 'willing seller, willing buyer' system has not been successful," Zuma told thousands of ANC supporters gathered at Mbombela Stadium for launch of the party's election manifesto in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga.

"We call on the finalisation of registration of beneficiaries so as to speed up land expropriation."

During the next five years, land reform would be expanded to become more productive and contribute to food security, he said.

On housing, Zuma said government would provide one million housing opportunities for qualifying households over the next five years.

Over 1.6 million homes would be connected to the power grid.

The supply of housing subsidies to civil servants such as nurses, teachers, police officers and other office workers would be increased, Zuma said.
