Durban - Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema on Monday apologised to Inkatha Freedom Party leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi for remarks he made while he was with the ANC Youth League.

Malema made the apology at a joint press conference in Durban, preceded by a two-hour meeting between the two leaders.

"I apologise for unfortunate remarks that were made at the time," he said.

Malema did not state specifically which remarks he was referring to.

Malema said the EFF had sought the meeting for some time.

He said a number of other issues were discussed during the two-hour meeting.

In his previous position as ANC Youth League president, Mr Malema often mocked and taunted the IFP leader. At one time he called Prince Buthelezi an "ANC factory fault".

In the run-up to the 2009 general elections, Mr Malema threatened to take the ANC's electioneering to Prince Buthelezi's "backyard". Again, j ust before the 2011 local government elections, Mr Malema threatened to go to Mahlabathini - the veteran IFP leader's home village outside Ulundi - "to recruit his children and his wife". For his part, Prince Buthelezi has described Mr Malema as "deranged" and said he was not "raised very well and taught respect at home".
