Pretoria - The 2014 national elections will take place on 7 May, the presidency has announced.

President Jacob Zuma made the announcement on Friday.

"After consulting with the IEC, I would like to inform the Souh African people locally and abroad, that the fifth national general elections in the Republic of South Africa will be held on the 7th of May 2014, throughout the country."

Leak
Earlier, the presidency issued a statement criticising DA leader Helen Zille for leaking confidential information about the announcement of the election date.

On Friday morning, Zille tweeted that the election date would be announced on Friday.

Presidential spokesperson Mac Maharaj said the presidency took "serious exception" to Zille leaking information that arose during a confidential consultation between President Jacob Zuma, premiers and the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) on Thursday to discuss election preparations.

"Ms Zille, as premier, sits in meetings discussing serious matters of state. She should thus respect confidentiality and not abuse the privilege and trust accorded to her by virtue of her status," said Maharaj.

The president hosted the meeting of the IEC and premiers at the Sefako Makgatho Presidential Guest House in Pretoria, on the sidelines of the Cabinet lekgotla.
