David Sibanda (16) and Ntsele Kholwane (16) from Etwatwa Secondary School were on their way to school on Wednesday morning when they were struck by a train.
Sifungo Gujane said the train his friends were on had stopped because of a power failure caused by rain.
"We were late, so David and Ntsele decided to walk to school," said Sifungo.
"But when they jumped the tracks at Oosrand Train Station, they didn't see another train coming."
The boys were struck and died instantly.
"Whenever I close my eyes, their images play in my mind," said Sifungohe.
Margaret Sibanda, David's mum, couldn't believe her son was gone.
"He was my pillar of strength," said Margaret.
"He was reliable and would pay my clothing accounts when I sent him.
Margaret got a call from her husband that there was a problem at home.
"I rushed home and heard the news that my son was no more," she said.
The Ntsele family was also shocked about the death of Kholwane.
Officials from Passenger Rail Agency of SA went with the two families to identify the bodies of the pupils at the Springs government mortuary, yesterday.
The Gauteng Department of Education send condolences to the family.
An inquest docket has been opened.
