MDC-T secretary general Tendai Biti and members of his renewal team were on Tuesday expelled from the party with the leader Morgan Tsvangirai announcing that an elective congress will be held in October.

Announcing the expulsion of Biti and his backers at party headquarters after a national council which voted for the dismissal of the former Finance minister, Tsvangirai said the team has betrayed the struggle by demanding a leadership renewal and challenging his leadership credentials.

"A total of 162 out of 167 delegates voted for the expulsion of Mr Biti and those who attended the bogus meeting. The national council has summarily expelled Mr Biti and all those who attended that meeting," he said.

Tsvangirai also announced the recalling of nine sitting members of parliament who are in the renewal team that suspended him from the party on Saturday.
