Johannesburg - Limpopo police said three men had been arrested at the Beit Bridge border post on Wednesday when they were caught allegedly attempting to transport illegal explosives from South Africa into Zimbabwe.
Spokesperson Ronel Otto said: "Members at the border post followed up information about a vehicle possibly transporting explosives."
When police found the vehicle, they searched it and confiscated five detonators and five gel cartridges.
The men are expected to appear in the Musina Magistrate's Court on Friday on charges of possession of illegal explosives.
"The possibility that they might have been involved in a criminal act in the country before going back to Zimbabwe is also being investigated," Otto said.
