A newborn baby was found in a storm water tunnel under a road in extension 7, Atteridgeville, Tshwane, SA, by Sam Tjale when he was going to work.

Tjale saw a dog pulling an onion bag from the dirty water near the storm water tunnel.

"I was on my way to get a taxi. When I lifted the bag I saw a baby's leg," said Sam.

"I ran to a house nearby to tell them what I had found and then I called the police to the scene."

A resident, Zanele Maboa, said: "I was shocked to hear from the man that there was a baby in the stream.

"If the mum didn't want the baby she could have left it at someone's house instead of dumping it."

The horror find outraged other community members who threatened to go house-to-house to search for the mother.

The baby's body was taken away in a mortuary van.

Police Captain Thomas Mufamadi said cops were investigating a case of concealment of birth.
