JOHANNESBURG - Radio listeners took to social networks to express their shock following the death of Metro FM presenter Eddie Makhosonke Zondi. Zondi presented Metro's 3pm to 6pm slot called the Romantic Repertoire.

The 47-year-old passed away on Monday morning and the cause of death is yet unknown.

The station's manager Martin Vilakazi confirmed the news on air around midday on Monday.

According to the station's website, Zondi was born in Soweto and moved to Durban where he got to meet late then-Radio legend Cyril Mchunu known to his devoted listeners as Kansas City. He studied Speech and Drama at Fuba in Johannesburg and attended the Wits University School of Broadcasting. He started at Metro FM as a weekend on the field sports presenter. He was offered the 3 to 6 music slot in 1999. Outside of Metro, Eddie has released four compilation CDs titled Zondi's Romantic Ballads. Metro Fm's music line-up has taken a turn following Zondi's death.

Upbeat music has been replaced with slow soulful songs such as In My Time by Teddy Pendegrass, Never Gonna Let You Go by Tamia and other melodies that used to dominated Zondi's playlist. "The icon that we followed and inspired us to get into radio, bra Eddie Zondi is no more," said Metro FM presenter Amon Mokoena.
