An alleged cannibal - accused of killing a man before eating his heart with a knife and fork, was the picture of calmness as he made his first appearance in the Athlone Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

Andrew "Master Benson" Chimbozo, 34, a Zimbabwean living in Langa, was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the murder of Mbuyiselo Manona, 62, of Malunga Park in Gugulethu.

Dreadlocked Chimbozo walked up from the holding cells neatly dressed in a beige coat.

A hulk of a man, he glanced momentarily across the public gallery benches before facing magistrate Keith le Keur.

He had plaster on the bridge of his nose and on his left eyebrow.

Prosecutor Phumlani Mphephuka told the court that Chimbozo faced a murder charge after "the accused was found eating the deceased."

Le Keur asked: "The deceased was stabbed by the accused?"

Mphephuka said: "Yes."

Le Keur asked whether Chimbozo wanted to represent himself, appoint an attorney or apply for legal aid.

"Legal aid will be okay," he said in a deep voice.

The State requested a seven-day postponement for further bail information.

Earlier, police said Manona's attacker had cut out his heart and eaten it with a knife and fork.

Manona's partner, Nomonde Tshabalala, 59, who had been living with him for three years, said the suspect had visited the couple and handed her R50 to buy liquor at a nearby shebeen.

When she returned she was told by their tenant not to enter as it was "a mess."

The matter was postponed to June 19.
