Mugabe assumes SADC chairmanship post

Zimbabwe will be the centre of SADC activities from August 2014 to August 2015, with President Robert Mugabe assuming the chairmanship of the 15-member regional grouping next month.
President Mugabe became Deputy Chair of SADC in Lilongwe, Malawi, during the 33rd summit. In that capacity, he chaired an extraordinary summit of the organisation when current chair, Malawi, could not attend.
President Mugabe will remain in the top leadership of the grouping until 2016 as a member of the SADC troika in his capacity as outgoing chairman of the group.
Briefing journalists on the coming SADC summit to be hosted by Zimbabwe in Victoria Falls, Foreign Affairs Minister Simbarashe Mumbengegwi said preparations for the 34th ordinary summit of the bloc are on course with some 450 delegates expected to attend.
In line with Zimbabwe's strong belief that the owners of resources should derive maximum benefits from their resources, the summit will be held under the theme: "SADC Strategy for Economic Transformation: Leveraging the Region's Diverse Resources for Economic and Social Transformation Through Beneficiation and Value Addition."
A special committee set up by government is on the ground to ensure the summit is a success with accommodation and other arrangements already in place in Victoria Falls.
The summit begins with ministers of foreign ministers and permanent representatives before the heads of state and government hold their deliberations from the 17th to the 18th of August.
Several observers have commended the region for the prevailing peace and tranquillity and for establishing a standby peacekeeping force.
The Southern African Development Community has played a big role in bringing stability to member countries and is involved in various developmental projects for the attainment of prosperity in the region.
These include transport infrastructure, aviation and power sectors.
