Modimolle - A Limpopo serial rapist has been sentenced to serve 154 years in prison.

The convict, Josaya Oupa Monyeki (34), was sentenced in the Modimolle Regional Court on Tuesday.

"The suspect will serve the full six life sentences separately following the six life sentences he was handed the six rape charges he was facing. That means he will be in jail for 154 years and an additional four years for a robbery charge which will also run separately," Limpopo police Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi told African Eye News Service.

Mulaudzi said Monyeki would target women who walked alone in Modimolle.

"Since 2010 he would target women, drag them from behind, rape them at knife point and rob them and leave them in the bushes. He was arrested in 2012 after police announced that there was a serial rapist in the area and the community helped," said Mulaudzi.

Mulaudzi said Monyeki is also facing other two counts of rape and robbery that he will be heard in the Modimolle Regional Court on 8 October.

Acting provincial commissioner of the police in Limpopo Major General Ntombi Dladla welcomed the sentence, saying it will serve as a lesson to those who think of raping others.

"We believe this sentence will teach other would-be rapists that the law is tough on crimes against women and children and as the police we will put out all stops to get to the bottom of every crime and ensure tougher sentences for offenders", said Dladla.
