The President of the Republic of Southern Sudan, General Salva Kiir  says Zimbabwe occupies a special place in its history as it emerged as one of the best friends which offered material, moral and political support during the struggle for independence.

General Kiir was speaking during an interview  Zimbabwe's state controlled ZBC News on Saturday after taking oath as President of Southern Sudan in the country's capital, Juba. Head of State and Government and Commander in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, President Robert Mugabe, was among the more than 13 leaders who witnessed the country's independence celebrations.

General Kiir paid tribute to President Mugabe for remaining principled and supportive of the wishes and aspirations of the people of Southern Sudan which were finally realised today.
