A 27-year-old Zimbabwean, working in South Africa, was crushed to death by a train on Sunday morning, a local daily has reported.

Bulawayo24 News received a WhatsApp update of the incident on 6 October 2014.

It was not immediately clear what led to Thamsanqa Gumpo of Nsezi in Umzingwane district being crushed by the commuter train on his way from Thembisa to his workplace in Johannesburg.

The deceased's uncle, Brian Gumpo, from Bulawayo confirmed the death.

"It is tragic. We are still shocked by news of the accident. It's not really clear what happened. There is a story that he dropped his wallet as he was boarding the train and when he tried to pick it up he was crushed by the train. My sister - who is the young man's aunt - left on Monday for Joburg to find out what happened and bring home the remains of the deceased for burial."

The deceased is survived by his wife, Heather and two children.

Thamsanqa was living with his family in Thembisa at the time of his death.

The deceased's uncle said Thamsanqa's body was expected to arrive at his rural home in Umzingwane tomorrow morning.
