Johannesburg - Two people have been confirmed dead following a multi-vehicle accident on the N12 East near Voortrekker Road in Alberton on Tuesday morning, Ekurhuleni emergency services said.

"For now we have only accounted for two people that have been declared dead on scene," spokesperson William Ntladi said.

"The number of injuries is not yet accounted for. We are working together with other medical stakeholders on site."

Earlier, paramedics said it appeared more than 20 vehicles were involved in the accident after the driver of a petrol tanker lost control on the highway.

"A petrol tanker lost control heading down the N12 near Voortrekker Road in Alberton," ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said.

"He collided with multiple vehicles. ER24 as well as other medical services have begun treating the injured."

Netcare911 spokesperson Santi Steinmann said one critically injured patient was airlifted to hospital.

It was believed the accident happened around 07:30.

Ekurhuleni metro police were not immediately available for comment.
