Johannesburg - Major roads in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape have been closed due to heavy snowfall on Tuesday morning, the SABC reported.
The N3 highway between Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal has been closed right across the Free State due to icy weather, the SABC reported on Tuesday morning. It has been closed from the Wilge toll plaza near Villiers to the Tugela toll plaza at Ladysmith.
Motorists were warned to suspend their travels until conditions improved, the broadcaster reported.
Traffic is already backed up at the Villiers Toll Plaza as snow continues to fall in the area, according to Eyewitness News.
Trucks have jack-knifed in places as a result of the road conditions, and the reopening of the highway will be entirely dependent on the weather, the N3 Toll Concession said.
The cold weather is expected to remain until Wednesday.
Other major routes like the N5 and N11 have been closed at mountain passes as a result of snow. Motorists have been urged to postpone their journeys until conditions improved.
A number of roads in the Eastern Cape, including the N2 between Kokstad and Mount Ayliff, the Wapadsberg and Lootsberg passes, and the R72 between Kenton on Sea and Alexandria have also been closed.
The N1 between Beaufort West and Richmond was closed for part of Monday.
