United Kingdom is to expel all Libyan Embassy staff and formally recognise the rebel-led National Transitional Council (NTC) as the country's governing authority.
Eight members of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's representatives based at the west London embassy have been asked to leave Britain.
The United Kingdom Foreign Secretary, William Hague speaking at a press conference in London, said Britain is doing what is "necessary, legal and right" in Libya,
Mr Hague announced that Britain has taken the decision to formally recognise Libya's rebels as the country's legitimate government.
"The Prime Minister and I have decided that the United Kingdom recognises and will deal with the National Transitional Council as the sole governmental authority in Libya," Mr Hague said at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
"In line with that decision we summmoned the Libyan charge d'affaires to the Foreign Office today and informed him that he and the other regime diplomats from the Kadhafi regime must leave the UK."
"We no longer recognise them as the representatives of the Libyan government."
