A ZIMBABWEAN MEN  working as a driver in Botswana  has been locked up in jail for working in that country without permit and trying to bribe a police officer with 800 Pula in effort to evade arrest.

Jairosi Tongai (32) who works for Zac Construction company as a driver was not asked to plead to two counts one of illegal working in that country and that of trying to bribe the police when he appeared before Francistown Chief magistrate Gaedupe Makgato.

The magistrate Further locked him up to allow police to make further investigations and after the prosecution led by  Thulaganyo Pitso expressed fears that if granted bail Tongai will flee the country since he was a foreigner..

The court heard that on February 3, 2015 at or near Ngwasha Veterinary Gate, the Tongai allegedly offered to give Detective Sergeant Boikhutso Madwala, the sum of P800 as bribery so that he will not be charged for working in the country without a work permit.

Botswana media reported that on the second count, the court heard that Tongai was arrested while driving a truck registered under Shamanek Construction Company and he failed to produce the work permit for the same company upon request.

Pitso for the state asked the court to remand the accused person in custody because investigations into the matter were still ongoing.

Pitso said Tongai was stopped by the police at Ngwasha Veterinary Gate and was asked to produce his work permit.

Tongai then produced a copy of a workers permit bearing a different name to that of an organisation he was working for.

He was driving a truck belonging to Shamanek Construction Company whereas his permit suggests that he was working for Zac Construction.

He then tried to bribe the police officer after he was notified that he was going to be charged for working in Botswana without proper documents.

In his defense, Tongai said he did not try to bribe the police officer but wanted to pay an admission of guilt fee.
