The South African Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) is investigating the death of an alleged associate of South Africa's most wanted fugitive, Bongani Moyo, during what the Hawks described as a "scuffle" on Wednesday morning.

ICD spokesperson Moses Dlamini yesterday confirmed they were investigating the death of Mthungameli Mpofu.

"The team had information that the man [Mthungameli Mpofu] was seen with Bongani Moyo last week," said McIntosh Polela.

"They went to his house in the early hours of yesterday [Wednesday] morning to detain him and question him. I am told he apparently resisted arrest and after a scuffle he collapsed and died," he said.

He said: "Our team had information that Mpofu was seen with Moyo last week."

He said the deceased resisted arrest, which led to the "scuffle".

Polela said the Hawks team "assured" him that they used minimal force in the raid on Mpofu's home.

"He collapsed and died," said Polela.

Mpofu, who was also wanted in Zimbabwe for bank robbery, was out on bail after he was arrested for fraud in Springs.

Polela said the Hawks were still searching for Moyo, who was on crutches at the time of his court escape.

Moyo has been on the run since escaping from the Pretoria Magistrate's Court a few weeks ago.

South African Police have since offered a R50000 reward for information leading to his re-arrest.
