A Zimbabwean man in Botswana who allegedly used a P270, 000 stolen cheque to fraudulently buy three cars has been nabbed and brought to book.
Jafet Chingaunda allegedly stole a cheque from First National bank (FNB) in Gaborone sometime in February and bought three vehicles from Jan Japan grey import car dealership in Francistown.
In court this week, prosecution admitted statements from 15 witnesses gathered by the police to prove a case of uttering false information and obtaining by false pretense against Chingaunda.
The court heard how the accused obtained a cheque from FNB in Gaborone and bought the cars valued at P266 000 and even cashed P4000 change from the stolen cheque.
After the alleged crime, Chingaunda registered the cars using names of locals whom he also enlisted to drive the vehicles on the day he was nabbed.
The accused man so far pleaded not guilty and is therefore expected to defend himself in court since he could not afford a lawyer.
Chief Magistrate Gaedupe Makgatho remanded Chingaunda behind bars until August 7 when he would be brought again before court for mention and confirmation of trial date.
Inspector Alfred Kebinakgabo prosecuted the case from the prosecution division in Francistown police.
