Outgoing SADC Chairperson President Robert Mugabe has arrived in Gaborone, Botswana to attend the 35th Ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government which runs from the 17th to the 18th of August.
The summit, which is set to focus on implementation of the Regional Industrialisation Strategy, will also see President Mugabe handing over the bloc's chairmanship to President Seretse Ian Khama of Botswana.
The two-day summit will be held under the theme, "Accelerating Industrialisation of SADC Economies Through Transformation of Natural Endowment and Improved Human Capital."
Participants are also expected to review progress towards achieving the objectives outlined in the Revised Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP) 2015 – 2020.
The 15-member economic bloc adopted the RISDP blueprint to guide the implementation of SADC programmes over the next five years, with a particular focus on industrial development and market integration, infrastructure in support of regional integration, and peace and security cooperation, among other issues.
According to the provisional programme, four presidents, Dr Hage Geingob of Namibia, Pakalitha Mosisili of Lesotho, Edgar Lungu of Zambia and Filipe Nyusi of Mozambique are expected to deliver their maiden speeches.
President Ian Seretse Khama will be at the helm of the grouping for the next 12 months while Lesotho Prime Minister Pakalitha Mosisili is expected to take over from President Jacob Zuma as the chair of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security.
During his tenure as the SADC Chairperson President Mugabe was able to champion the adoption of regional industrialisation drive and promote the value addition agenda.
Prior to the summit, there has been growing calls for the bloc to build upon the solid foundation laid by the outgoing chair in ensuring the region attains sustainable economic transformation for the benefit of citizens of the member states.
