Poo protesters gets a suspended sentence

The nine Ses'khona People's Rights Movement members convicted of throwing faeces at the Cape Town International Airport have received a suspended sentence.
According to News24, Magistrate Nonkosi Sabi said the actions of Ses'khona leader Andile Lili, secretary Loyiso Nkohla, and seven other accused were "not only embarrassing to the country as a whole, but it infringed on the rights and human dignity of others", who had been exposed to the faeces dumped at the airport two years ago.
Despite this, she said she believed the nine were "not hardened criminals" and that they could "contribute positively to society".
They were sentenced to three years imprisonment, suspended for five years.
They were cleared on charges of contravening Cape Town's environmental health by-laws and the National Environment Management Act in December last year.
Landdros Street was on lockdown on Wednesday as crowds of people gathered outside the Bellville Magistrate's Court ahead of sentencing proceedings.
As the nine later left the court, the crowd cheered and sang as law enforcement officers and police kept watch.
