Sangomas in South Africa on Saturday started cleansing of the notoriously bloody roads in that country. amid reports the roads have claimed many lives.
Daily Sun reported that for 14 days beforehand, sangomas kept their bodies pure and their hearts in a state of peace.
Then on Saturday they were finally ready to carry out their cleansing of the notoriously bloody roads, the R23 and R549 in Heidelberg, south of Joburg.
According to the Lesedi traffic department, a few years ago about 30 people a month would lose their lives on these roads.
The sangomas carried out their first cleansing a year ago, and the number of deaths dropped to just five.
Now they want to reduce the bloodshed further.
The sangomas from the nearby town of Ratanda had come to remove the stubborn evil spirits that they say are sucking the blood of innocent pedestrians and motorists.
Survivors of accidents on these roads often report having seen shadowy shapes of clouds and cows crossing just before they crashed.
The sangomas closed the roads for 10 minutes at a time as they worked to put an end to the evil spirits' reign of terror.
Sangoma Martha Mahlangu spoke to the spirits.
She said: "We beg you to go back to where you come from!
"We're here to capture you and to put you back in the graveyard," Martha said.
Sprinkling muthi on the road, the sangomas burned mphepho and captured the spirits inside a small calabash.
They then went to Ekuthuleni Cemetery in Ratanda where they buried the calabash wrapped in a goat skin in a small grave.
If all goes well, motorists and pedestrians will no longer be bewitched to an early grave by evil spirits
