A HORRIFIC accident between an 18-wheeler truck carrying tons of mealie- meal and a car got eyewitnesses shivering.

But some motorists and passersby who got to the scene before the cops thought it was their lucky day. They managed to score mealie-meal bags scattered on the road while both the drivers lay dying!

The accident happened at the intersection of the M7 and N2 near the Edwin Swales off-ramp, west of Durban on Tuesday.

Motorist Mpumelelo Sithole (25) said it was shocking to see how people arrived and helped themselves to the bags of meal.

"No one went to see if the drivers needed help. Maybe if they had received help earlier they would have survived," said Mpumelelo.

Another motorist, Precious Mtungwa (23), said she didn't blame those who helped themselves.

"Food is expensive these days. Mealie-meal costs almost R100 for a big bag. The bags were scattered on the road. It's not as if the people were stealing, and there's not much they could have done to save the drivers," she said.

Netcare 911's Chris Botha said both drivers died.
