The DA said on Thursday a disciplinary process would be initiated against its MP Dianne Kohler Barnard for sharing a Facebook post that was inconsistent with the party's values for fairness, freedom, fairness and opportunity.

Kohler Barnard shared a post praising former president PW Botha and calling for his return in a post related to the KwaZulu-Natal Hawks boss Johan Booysen.

DA spokesperson Phumzile van Damme said party leader Mmusi Maimane has referred the matter to its federal legal commission.

Kohler Barnard, who also serves as DA's shadow minister of Police, has sinced apologised unreservedly.

Van Damme said Botha was a tyrant who oversaw the torture and murder of thousands of South Africans.

"That is why his predecessor, including Helen Suzman and Helen Zille, fought against the evil system of apartheid," Van Damme said.

"The DA is committed to building one nation, with one future, reversing the legacy of apartheid and creating opportunities for all."

Kohler Barnard was not available for comment.
