The 35th COMESA Policy organs meetings have kicked off in Lusaka, Zambia and will run until 8 December 2015.
COMESA website reported that the Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Matters was the first to meet and will run for two days, 1 and 2 December 2015.
"About 100 delegates representing government of all the 19 COMESA Member States and COMESA institutions are participating in the meetings that are taking place at the COMESA Secretariat. The other Policy Organs that will follow are the Inter-Governmental Committee and Council of Ministers," reads the COMESA report.
Assistant Secretary General in charge of Administration and Finance Amb. Nagla El Hussainy officially opened the meeting which will consider, among others the COMESA budget for 2016, review the status of contributions of the Member States, human resource issues including recruitment and renewal of staff contracts.
"We, at the Secretariat, are very proud to mention that we really value the advice and support of the Committee which is paramount in our continued endeavour to implement the COMESA Treaty, Authority and Council of Ministers decisions," Amb. El Hussainy said.
The Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Matters provides technical advice and services to the Secretariat by examining and improving the reports for onward submission to the Council of Ministers through the Intergovernmental Committee.
The Inter-governmental Committee (IC) which comprises Permanent Secretaries and Principal Secretaries in Ministries that implement COMESA programmes in Member States will meet from 3 to 5 December.
The IC will consider reports from sectoral technical group and updates on the status of implementation of the policy decisions taken during the last Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in March 2015. Policy recommendations arising from the IC meetings will be presented to the Council of Ministers on 7 and 8 December 2015 for decision making.
The Council is responsible for overseeing the functioning and development of COMESA and ensuring the implementation of agreed policies. Its decisions bind Member States and the Secretariat to implement them in the subsequent period.
