Preshalin Naidoo‚ the man accused of causing a collision in which Top Billing presenter Simba Mhere and his friend died‚ has claimed that a mechanical defect in his car caused the crash.

Soweten Live reported that Naidoo‚ 24‚ is on trial in the Randburg Magistrate's Court‚ where he is facing charges of culpable homicide. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Mhere and his friend‚ Kady-Shay O'Bryan‚ who was a passenger in the car Mhere was driving‚ died on the scene of the accident on William Nicol Drive in Fourways‚ Johannesburg‚ on January 31.

In his plea explanation read out in court on Tuesday (08-12-15)‚ Naidoo said he was driving a white VW Polo GTI on William Nicol towards the N1‚ when the collision happened

"As a result of an unexpected and unforeseeable mechanical defect in the right suspension of the vehicle that I was driving‚ I lost control of the vehicle…"

He denied that he recklessly and negligently caused Mhere and O'Bryan's death.
