A WOMAN who masqueraded as a ghost and break in to several places stealing people's property in Auckland Park Johannesburg South Africa has been arrested after a long time hunt for the suspect.
The Daily Sun reported that a woman covered in a white duvet was caught jumping from one balcony to another of a residential complex yesterday.
According to residents, she was behind a number of recent break-ins.
At about 9.30am on Monday morning, Cassius Munzhelele (35) was walking around Laborie Village in Auckland Park, Joburg, with a friend when he spotted the woman.
"It looked like a ghost but we knew it wasn't one when we saw it struggling to get to the other side of a balcony. However, it looked as if she had experience in jumping from one balcony to another," he said.
Although the suspect weighed about 100kg, she was able to swing from one balcony to another. After she was spotted, tenants crowded outside to watch her.
She tried to get back into a flat but she was too big to fit through the window. The woman – who was on the second floor – tried to scare the crowd off with an empty beer bottle but they just stood there watching her.
Resident Kamogelo Lebesa said his friend's plasma TV and phones were stolen two weeks ago.
"We're certain this is the person who has been stealing from us. We're very surprised it's a woman," he said.
Police soon arrived on the scene and used a ladder to bring the suspect down from the balcony. They had to plead with the furious crowd not to moer her.
Warrant Officer Lorraine van Emmerik of the Brixton Police Station said a 20-year-old woman was arrested.
"A case of trespassing was opened. We only found keys on her and we can't link her with the break-ins as we need to investigate more," said Van Emmerik.
