A man from Sharpeville in the Vaal, south of Joburg reportedly died after drug abuse.

Daily Sun reported that a grieving  mother lost her only son to a suspected nyaope overdose a week ago.

Mamokete Mofokeng (40) spoke from her house in Sharpeville in the Vaal, south of Joburg, about the death of Tumelo Mofokeng (20).

His lifeless body was found at a friend's place in Vergenoeg, also in Sharpeville.

The mother said: "I don't know exactly what happened but it appears he died after using nyaope. His body was discovered by the friend's brother when he arrived home from work."

Mamokete said Tumelo was a self-confessed nyaope addict who always had tricks up his sleeve when he needed money.

"On the day he died he sent me a WhatsApp message in the morning asking for R10 for taxi fare to go and look for a job in Vereeniging. I told him to take money from the house. He took his CV and left his cousins at home, and that was the last time he was seen alive," she said.

That evening the family was called with news of Tumelo's death, and they immediately went to the scene.

"He still had his CV on him when he was found dead," Mamokete said.

Residents of the area where Tumelo died allegedly threatened to burn down the friend's house, calling it a drug den and a hiding place for nyaope addicts.

"People said my son was the second man to die from a nyaope overdose at that house. The first one was pushed from there in a wheelbarrow and taken to the police station, where he died outside," Mamokete said.

A post mortem confirmed that Tumelo died from a drug overdose.

"The forensic officials said blood samples will be sent to the lab to determine which drug took his life. The process could take months," she said.

Lieutenant Kay Makhubela said Tumelo's death will be investigated.
