CHIEF Tikhontele Dlamini has denied rumours that trapped miners at Lily Mine are being held hostage by a mine snake.
According to residents of Louw's Creek and Louieville, near Barberton, the three miners are being kept by a snake that wants the mine's management to offer it a sacrifice. They claim only a sacrifice will bring back the miners.
A gogo said , "These white people who run this mine do not sacrifice to the mine snake and that's why it is so angry."
Daily Sun reported that the residents claim management will have to dump bags filled with R1 coins into the mine's deepest shaft.
They say this was done every year until the mine was taken over by Vantage Goldfields.
However, Chief Dlamini of Lomshiyo Tribal Authority said the story of the snake was made up by zama zamas years ago. He said the mine was officially licensed in 1985 and no sacrifices were made before or after that date.
