A 24- year -old man from Somelo settlement in the North West District in Botswana nearly lost his hand and sustained head injuries after he was attacked by a suspected rival as he arrived home in the early hours of Valentine's Day.
The Voice reported that Obolokilwe Kgolagano is currently nursing injuries at Letsholathebe Hospital in Maun and awaiting an ambulance to transfer him to Mahalapye Hospital.
Narrating his story from the hospital bed, Kgolagano said that after drinking beer with his brother in the village he decided to go home to his girlfriend, Phothas Kgathego, 25, who he has been cohabiting with for close to three years.
He said that since he was drunk, he accidentally pushed the door hard while trying to knock.
"The door opened and as I stepped inside, Kgathego asked me to move back. She did that three times and the next thing somebody hit me on the head with some object."
Kgolagano said he suspects his girlfriend of eight years had accommodated another man on the night.
"She has not cheated me before and I wonder why she decided to bring another man home when she knew very well that I was going to come no matter what."
Though he managed to run for his life, Kgolagano says he later realised that he had been hit with what he thinks was an axe on his hand and head.
With blood all over his body and gripped with fear that he may lose his life he called for help and was taken to nearby clinic where they referred him to Letsholathebe Hospital.
He however does not know his attacker saying it was dark inside the house.
"My girlfriend has some explaining to do, she has not bothered to check on me since I got admitted and she is the one who brought a man into our house.
If she no longer loves me it is better to tell than killing me. "]
Kgathego could not be reached for a comment as her mobile phone was off.
Meanwhile Maun Police Station Commander Superintendent Peter Gochela said they have since arrested a 19 –year- old man in connection with the crime.
Gochela said that once the investigations are complete the suspect will be arraigned before court facing a charge of grievous bodily harm.
