Fake student nurses face axe

THE General Nursing Council of Zambia (GNC) has said it will inspect all nursing schools to verify reports that some unqualified students have been enrolled in some institutions.
Times of Zambia reported that Manager administration, Hacuma Natala said the GNC was particular about the enrollment process to ensure that only qualified students were allowed to train as nurses.
He was reacting to reports that some nursing colleges in Lusaka were enrolling unqualified Grade 12 students who were later allowed to re-write certain subjects as they progressed with studies.
"As GNC we have not received any reports, but we are not going to sit and wait for that report. We shall institute our own investigations through our inspectors and ensure that the vice is halted," Mr Natala said.
He said the measures put in place did not allow any nursing institution to enroll unqualified students.
Mr Natala, however, said the council had come up with a tight system in which all the applications were sent to the organisation and verified in conjunction with the Examinations Council of Zambia (ECZ) before selection was done.
"The selection process was done in presence of the ECZ and I don't think there can be room for unqualified students.
"The final list of the verified results are sent to the various institutions and those wanting are pursued by the relevant authorities," he said.
