Cops shut down brothel

EIGHT suspects were arrested by the Hawks in Durban North for various crimes, including prostitution and running a brothel. The cops were responding to a tip-off when they arrested the suspects aged between 24 and 54 on Sunday.

daily Sun reported that KZN Hawks spokesman, Lieutenant Simphiwe Mhlongo, said: "One of the suspects was found in possession of drugs, including ecstacy, cat, mandrax and dagga. Another suspect was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm with six live rounds of ammunition."

Mhlongo said the suspects will be charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm, dealing in drugs, possession of drugs, prostitution and keeping a brothel.

"They will appear in the Durban Magistrates Court soon," he said.

Meanwhile, over the weekend the Hawks arrested two suspects in Montrose, Pietermaritzburg for attempted murder, attempted theft of a motor vehicle, possession of unlicensed firearms as well as car break-in charges.

"Members spotted a suspicious vehicle during the operation and on following it, one suspect was found. The other suspects, who were waiting in the getaway vehicle, fired shots at the police, who then returned fire in self-defence," said Mhlongo.

Two of the suspects died and the other two were injured and taken to hospital.

"12 computer boxes from various cars, one jamming device, a police radio, a crowbar and three 9mm pistols with live rounds of ammunition were recovered." The suspects will appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrates Court once they are charged.
