Johannesburg - An newborn baby girl has been found buried alive in a shallow grave in Embalenhle township near Secunda in South Africa, Mpumalanga police said on Friday.
A passer-by saw legs protruding from under the sand on a dumping site around 16:00 on Thursday, Constable Vhangani Makhado said.
Police dug up the grave and removed the baby, who started crying a short while later, Makhado said. Her legs and feet had bruises.
"A woman apparently gave birth a few hours earlier and buried the baby," he said.
"It appeared she forgot to cover her legs with sand like the rest of the body."
The baby was taken to Evander Hospital for treatment.
A docket of child abandonment had been opened.
The mother was still being sought.
